If you own or rent a home there are a lot of things you should know how to do in order to keep it in good condition and keep the property value up. Things like landscaping, cleaning, decorating, and building things. Here is a list of “Dos and Don’ts” for around the home;

LANDSCAPE;

Do;

  • Drink lots of water when working in the yard
  • Consider your home’s appeal, exterior is just as important as interior.
  • Stay away from power lines when setting up a ladder or trimming trees

Don’t;

  • Don’t paint or cover utility boxes; gas, electric, water, etc.
  • Don’t touch an overhead wire with a pole or any other object

BENCH/ANIMAL HOUSING

 ELECTRICAL;

Do;

  • Make sure power is off before exposing electrical wires around the home
  • Inspect outlets and test switches on a regular basis
  • Provide shade for pets
  • Use power strips instead of electrical cords
  • Use insulated tools when working around electrical
  • Cover all electrical outlets and wall switches with cover plates
  • Keep electrical devices away from water sources
  • Tag breaker for area you are working on if powered down
  • Have ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) outlets in areas that may get wet, like next to sinks or outdoors
  • Fix or replace cords that have broken or cracked insulation
  • Use baking soda to douse an electrical fire

Don’t;

  • Don’t work on live wire
  • Don’t yank extension cords or power strips from the wall
  • Don’t plug an extension cord into a power strip or another extension cord
  • Don’t use water to put out an electrical fire
  • Don’t touch someone that is being shocked until you know all power has been disabled

HOW-TO;

PLUMBING; 

Do;

  • Make sure water valves are shut when working on plumbing if you have isolated valves or just close the main valve

Don’t;

  • Don’t pull any plumbing if water is in the line
  • Don’t use a wrench to tighten PVC fittings
